Additionally, his abandonment of the Shah of Iran in 1979 paved the way for the Ayatollah Khomeini’s rise, leading to decades of terror sponsorship, destabilization in the Middle East, and the oppression of women in Iran.
Clare: You're absolutely right, Barry. Carter was a good Christian man, a devoted husband, and a brilliant mind, but his policies were disastrous. His advisors were shockingly uninformed about the extremist ideology driving Khomeini, and declassified documents now show they misunderstood the various factions in Iran. The consequences have been devastating—since Carter’s decision, Iran has funded terror groups like Hezbollah and Hamas, and was even linked to the 9/11 attacks through a 2011 court ruling. Yet, no U.S. administration has ever held Iran accountable for these actions.
