LOWERING THE BAR? California’s Black English Plan Ignites National Debate Over Preschool Education
Barry: California activists now want preschool classrooms to recognize “Black English” as a legitimate language — and they are calling it progress.
A group called Black Californians United for Early Care and Education is reportedly pushing the state to treat “Black English” in early childhood education the same way it treats second languages like Spanish, Mandarin, or Greek.
Their argument?
That teaching children standard English creates a harmful “language hierarchy.”
My response is simple:
This is not empowerment.
This is lowering the bar.
Because standard English remains one of the most powerful tools for opportunity, education, employment, communication, and upward mobility in America.
And when we tell young black children that mastering it is somehow “not for them,” we are not helping them compete.
We are holding them back.
I call this the soft bigotry of low expectations dressed up as social justice.
Every immigrant family in America understands the power of English.
They push their children to learn it, master it, and use it because they know it opens doors.
But now, activists want to tell black preschoolers that the same standard does not apply to them.
Here is my warning:
If we truly care about black children succeeding, we give them every tool to win.
We do not tell them the tools are racist.
We do not teach them that proper English is oppression.
We do not trap them in a system that praises struggle instead of preparing children for success.

Real equity means preparing kids for the future, not limiting their opportunities.
