Barry: Imagine being told your face is a crime.
That is the reality for women in Afghanistan under the Taliban.
Women can be punished for showing their faces in public. They can dragged off a public street, arrested, beaten, and sometimes killed, all because the men in power claim they are protecting morality. Human Rights Watch has reported that Taliban restrictions require women and girls to cover their faces completely in public and have banned girls and women from secondary and higher education. Just their eyes may show....and according to some religious leaders, one eye is enough!
Think about what that means.
Her existence becomes the offense.
His behavior becomes her responsibility.
She is ordered to disappear so no one else has to answer for controlling himself.
And here is the part that should make every decent person furious:
When the Taliban took power again after America’s withdrawal, they promised the world that women’s rights would be preserved.
They said women would still have access to education, employment, and public life.
They lied.
They lied.
They lied.
And now Afghan women are paying the price.
The Taliban has banned girls from education beyond the sixth grade, barred women from universities, restricted women’s work, and pushed millions of women out of public life. In 2026, UN agencies reported that an estimated 2.4 million Afghan girls remain excluded from secondary education.
This is not simply a clothing debate.
This is about whether a woman is allowed to learn.
Whether she is allowed to speak.
Whether she is allowed to be seen.
Whether she is allowed to work, travel, study, and move through public life as a complete human being.
And right now, in Afghanistan, the answer is being forced on women by men with guns, whips, laws, and religious authority.
After 20 years, trillions of dollars, and thousands of American lives, the cameras left…
And Afghan women were pushed back behind walls.
Where is the outrage?
Where are the celebrities?
Where are the university leaders?
Where are the politicians who say women’s rights are universal?
If equality matters, Afghan women should count.
If bodily autonomy matters, their bodies should count.
If freedom of expression matters, their faces and voices should count.
But too many of the loudest voices in the West have gone silent.
Completely silent.
They will march for slogans.
They will lecture America.
They will condemn Israel.
They will scream about oppression when it fits their politics.
But when women are being erased by the Taliban in real time?
Nothing.
And that silence is not compassion.
It is cowardice.
One video cannot give Afghan women freedom.
But silence guarantees their erasure.
Every movement that claims to defend women should have to answer one question:
Where are you now?
Where are you now when Afghan girls are locked out of school?
Where are you now when women are told their faces and voices are shameful?
Where are you now when an entire generation of women is being forced back into the shadows?
Here is my point:
Women’s rights do not stop at the border of political convenience.
If you only defend women when it is safe, fashionable, or useful to your ideology, then you are not defending women.
You are defending a narrative.
And Afghan women deserve better than the silence of cowards.

Afghanistan is one of the clearest tests of whether the world actually believes in women’s rights.
Not hashtags.
Not speeches.
Not empty slogans.
Real rights.
The right to learn.
The right to work.
The right to speak.
The right to be seen.
The right to live as a full human being.
If the so-called defenders of women cannot speak clearly about Afghanistan, then they have no moral authority to lecture anyone else.
