CHICAGO MAYOR JOHNSON FACES CRITICISM FOR COMPARING SCHOOL SPENDING DEBATE TO SLAVERY
Barry: The former mayor of Chicago, Lori Lightfoot, was considered a far-left leader, but her successor, Brandon Johnson, is even more extreme. Johnson recently compared opposition to his new school spending initiatives to supporting slavery, stating, “When our people wanted to be liberated and emancipated… they said it would be fiscally irresponsible to liberate Black people.” In his view, anyone against his spending plans is aligned with pro-slavery attitudes. In response, the entire school board, which he appointed, resigned in protest. To put it in perspective, Chicago schools are failing miserably, with the vast majority of high school graduates lacking basic reading and writing skills. And on top of that, crime rates are soaring, and the city’s pension system is broken. Chicago is a mess.
Clare: The issue isn’t about race or freeing anyone; it’s about mismanagement. When a city invites anyone and everyone through its doors as a sanctuary city, it strains the budget. Combine that with a lack of academic standards—promoting students year after year, even when they can’t read or do math—and you have a city in crisis. The $10 billion budget you mentioned is massive, yet it’s being used ineffectively, all while taxpayers are fleeing. And while Chicago might call itself a gun-free zone, the reality is that gangs, including Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua, are present and thriving. The future of Chicago looks grim as these problems continue to compound.
